We will answer your questions as soon as possible.

Q: Where are you located?

A: 14362 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd., Suite 2146 Scottsdale, AZ 85260

We are two blocks north of Kierland Commons and one block west of Scottsdale Road in the Executive Office Suites. There is convenient free parking right outside the building. Once inside, you will be greeted by a receptionist and will have access to complimentary coffee and tea while you wait for your session to begin.

Q: What are your credentials?

A: James has been a certified licensed therapist for over 10 years. He is currently licensed in Arizona and is certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors. James earned his Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from the New York University (NYU) Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development.

Q: Do you accept insurance?

A: Please contact James for a list of current providers. If your insurance is not accepted, James will provide you with a "superbill" that shows the services rendered and the amount paid for those services. You can then submit this superbill to your insurance provider to obtain reimbursement of fees. The amount of reimbursement is different for each provider and is based on the insurance coverage you have. From Within Counseling cannot guarantee coverage or reimbursement for any services and urges you to contact your provider for full information prior to scheduling an appointment.

Q: When can I expect to see results?

A: This is a very difficult question to answer. So many factors play into how well you will respond to treatment. Generally, clients who are serious about therapy and make a strong commitment to their sessions and to implementing what it is they have learned in sessions will make the fastest improvements. Some people have complicated concerns that may take months to uncover and treat while others may see improvement in just a few sessions. All in all, it is consistency, dedication and the true desire to get better that influences your success.

Q: Do you work with both men and women?

A: Absolutely. We have extensive experience working with both men and women and never discriminate. We treat every client equally and use the most effective means of treatment we have available for a particular issue you may have.

Q: Can you help my relationship?

A: At From Within Counseling, we work to develop the expectations, maturity and skills to get your relationship back on track. We work on identifying troubling behavior and learning to communicate better. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that we can save your relationship. Success depends on the commitment of both parties. If we cannot save your relationship, we can work to clarify your needs and to have the tools necessary for a successful relationship in the future.

Q: I need a new direction. Can you help?

A: Sometimes people just need a little help getting back on track or want to start in a whole new direction. We can help you work on goal setting, establishing realistic expectations, communication skills and other things you may need to improve your life and reach your expectations. Oftentimes, clients call just needing a life coach and we can help!

Q: What are the risks of counseling?

A: Therapy most certainly has both positive and negative effects. For people who are consistent and who want to make positive change in their lives, therapy has been shown to be very beneficial. For some, it can be a reasonable alternative to medication or can be used as a compliment to medication. Therapy often leads to better relationships by reducing or managing anxiety, stress, depression and other common issues. However, for many people, therapy also involves discussing and exploring unpleasant experiences and with that you may experience feelings of sadness, loneliness, frustration, guilt or anger. All that said, by revisiting feelings and processing emotions, many clients experience significant positive change in their life.

Q: What counseling methods do you use?

A: There are numerous approaches that can be used in mental health therapy. At From Within Counseling, we meet with new clients one-on-one and complete an initial assessment. After this first meeting, we are able to understand the issues that need to be addressed and will tailor your treatment to the most effective method to deal with your situation. Common methods that we use are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and Client Centered Therapy. Click on these in the Therapeutic Services section of this page to learn more about each therapeutic method.

Q: Is what we talk about confidential?

A: Generally speaking, communication between a client and therapist is entirely confidential. We maintain the highest standard for ensuring your privacy. There are times, however, where a therapist is required to warn against serious threats that a client might pose to themselves or to others. Additionally, when using cell phones or email to discuss issues, you must understand that (as with all electronic communication) there is a risk of an unsecured communication. For our complete privacy policy, please refer to our Privacy Policy on our client forms page of this website.

Q: What is your privacy policy?
